19,000 young people in Manchester help hit 2m apprenticeship goal

Two million apprenticeships have been created in the UK since 2010 with 18,940 people in Manchester getting a vital start in life.

Apprenticeships offered by Manchester companies performed a crucial role in the local economy.

Apprenticeships are a vital part of building a stronger economy and a fairer society. By ensuring young people are able to earn and learn, we give them the opportunity to get on it life.
I am delighted young people in Manchester have benefited from fantastic training and employment opportunities that apprenticeships offer. I’m also delighted that over two million young people across England have been able to take advantage.

Liberal Democrat Secretary of State for Business, Innovation & Skills Vince Cable MP said:

“Reaching the two millionth apprenticeship is testament to Liberal Democrat’s commitment to apprenticeships. Apprenticeships give young people the chance to start a career and give businesses the talent to grow.

“This isn’t just about numbers. From space engineering, to TV production, to legal services, apprenticeships are the ticket to a great job and a route employers trust to access the skills they need.

“That is why the Liberal Democrats made them a priority when we entered office and I am delighted that we have been able to deliver on our promise to have two million apprentices start in this Parliament.”

More needs to be done to help South Manchester carers

On Carers Rights Day more needs to be done to support the 8302 carers in South Manchester who are the unsung heroes of the system.

New research by Carers UK shows there are 2720 people who begin caring annually in South Manchester.

Carers save the state tens of billions of pounds a year and the Liberal Democrats have created a package of measures to support carers as part of our pre-manifesto.

The package includes raising the amount carers can earn before losing their allowance.

It also contains measures for more flexible working hours, support in returning to the jobs market and a scheme informing carers of their rights and giving them access to facilities.

This follows Lib Dem plans announced earlier this year to introduce an annual Carer’s Bonus of up to £250.

The carers in South Manchester all do a remarkable job. We need to make sure they receive the support they need.

Carers contribute so much to our economy and society we want to make it easier for them to stay in work and balance their caring responsibilities with other parts of their lives.

The Liberal Democrats believe in offering opportunity for everyone in order to build a stronger economy and a fairer society and that means really valuing the work that informal carers do, day in day out.

Liberal Democrat Health Committee Co-Chair Paul Burstow said: "Carers are the unsung heroes of our care system. In Government Liberal Democrats have legislated new rights to support and fund more breaks for carers.

"Our carer’s package of measures recognises the huge contribution carers make. It aims to offer the right support at the right time to carers in work, when dealing with the NHS and financially.”

John Leech MP to champion Sustrans' campaign for safer streets in Manchester.

South Manchester Liberal Democrat MP John Leech has become a champion for Sustrans’ Campaign for Safer Streets, supporting the right of every child to have a safe walk, bike or scoot to school.

John Leech MP said today:

“In Manchester, Lib Dems proposed the 20’s Plenty speed limit in residential areas, and I am supporting this Sustrans’ campaign because every child has the right to a safe walk, bike or scoot to school,”

John, who last year submitted a road safety bill in the House of Commons, added,

“Walking, cycling or scooting to school is a great way to include physical activity in a child’s daily routine, while building healthy habits for a lifetime. If we can create an environment where children can have an active and safe journey to school, we’ll not only prevent needless and tragic road incidents, but also improve public health, reduce air pollution and reduce road congestion.”

Sustrans is campaigning for a safer school run to tackle the inactivity crisis and predictions that in the UK as many as 70% of girls and 55% of boys could be overweight or obese by 2050.

Yet with nearly half of children failing to achieve the recommended levels of physical activity each day, the number of families choosing to make the school run by car is on the rise. Little wonder when in 2012, 33 children were killed and over 1800 seriously injured while walking and cycling.

Sustrans’ Campaign for Safer Streets is calling for:

·         Dedicated funding to transform routes and invest in walking and cycling at the local level
·         20mph default speed limit across built up areas – makes everyone’s route safer
·         Stronger duties and incentives on Local Authorities to develop routes and promote walking and cycling

Details of John’s Road Safety Bill can be found at http://johnleechmp.wordpress.com/2012/02/21/road-safety-bill/

Chorlton's Village Tandoori Makes Regional Final of Tiffin Cup 2014

Following a nomination from local MP John Leech, the Village Tandoori in Chorlton has made the regional finals of the prestigious Tiffin Cup.

The Tiffin Cup is awarded every year by the Tiffin Club of MP’s. Formed in 2006 and chaired by Keith Vaz MP, the aim is not only to celebrate and applaud the quality of South Asian food in the Britain, but also to raise much needed money for charity. This year’s charity is “World Vision”

John Leech MP said today,

“The curry industry is incredibly important to Manchester and the UK. It is worth £3.6bn and employs 80,000.  I am happy that the Village Tandoori has made the regional finals, wish them the best of luck and will be there to support them in the House of Commons if they make the grand final on the 8th July.

Tiffin Club Chair Keith Vaz MP added,

“After the overwhelming success of last year’s competition we are looking forward to another chance to sample some of the best offerings of Indian food in Britain. I wish the Village Tandoori the best of luck in the competition."

New Patron puts Chorlton’s professional Theatre on the map

The Edge Theatre & Arts Centre in Chorlton has persuaded Manchester’s hottest property to become a Patron. JULIE HESMONDHALGH, well respected and nationally-loved actress has agreed to be one of the faces of the small theatre.

Julie is well-known for her moving and sensitive role of Hayley Cropper in CORONATION STREET, which we saw her leave in February this year. She has since taken on roles at Manchester’s iconic Royal Exchange Theatre and has just returned to Manchester following a run of BLACK ROSES: THE KILLING OF SOPHIE LANCASTER at London’s South Bank Centre.
Julie is also known for her charity work, which includes fronting an awareness campaign for pancreatic cancer (following her storyline in CORONATION STREET) and for the Sophie Lancaster Foundation. She is running the Manchester 10k in May for a small local charity.

The Edge opened in May 2011 and is now recognised by audiences and critics as a theatrical force on the Manchester touring circuit for small-scale quality work from around the country. Thanks to support from the Family Arts Network and Big Imaginations Children’s Festival, the theatre often sells out the work it hosts for young people.

The Edge also produces and presents its own theatre, often brand new musical work written and directed by The Edge Artistic Director, Janine Waters, with music by The Edge Musical Director, Simon Waters. The most recent piece, DREAMING UNDER A DIFFERENT MOON, premiered in December 2012. Notably, The Edge also produced SPINACH, which played in The Studio, Royal Exchange and Kings Head Theatre, Islington in 2012.

Other activities at The Edge include a series of courses for unemployed people and those on low incomes, courses, classes and workshops for adults and families: Theatre Club and Edge Youth Theatre meet regularly; Acting Courses, Tap Dancing, Ukulele Club and, new for this season, Movie Moves (a dance course where you will learn to dance like they do on the big screen) are also part of The Edge repertoire.

Julie Hesmondalgh says: “I can’t wait to become a patron of this little theatre with big aspirations. I am looking forward to meeting the people who enjoy the facilities and to helping to make others aware of this little gem in the heart of Manchester’s buzzing arts community that is Chorlton.”

The Edge Artistic Director, Janine Waters says: ‘We’re thrilled to welcome Julie Hesmondhalgh into The Edge family. Her profile and her commitment to theatre and communities will enhance our reputation and will help us in our ambition to put The Edge on the map.”

Lib Dem Stockport shows us how its done

Liberal Democrat-run Stockport Council is leading the way in tackling poor road and pavement surfaces. It is funding a massive £100 million investment in roads and pavements by borrowing the money. It’s worked out it can pay for this by the reduced cost of repairs going forwards and savings from things like claims for accidents and falls.

Labour Councillors in Manchester voted down £3 million of investment in our roads, pavements and gullies at a recent meeting. Figures I've uncovered show that just in the last year Manchester City Council has paid out £2.7million in compensation for Council negligence and spent £1.9 million repairing potholes. Yet only ONE road in Chorlton will receive any resurfacing repairs this year.

Use Airport windfall money to implement Twenty’s Plenty for Manchester

Manchester Council should use part of the £14million windfall it received from Airport shares to introduce 20mph limits on Manchester’s residential roads say local Lib Dems. Nearly two years ago Chorlton Lib Dem Cllr Victor Chamberlain put forward a successful Council motion calling for 20mph limits on all of Manchester’s residential roads. Cllr Chamberlain has now applied to use part of the Council’s Clean and Green fund established from the airport dividend to see them rolled out across the city.

Cllr Chamberlain said: “20mph limits not only help save lives and prevent road injuries but they also make our roads more useable for everyone. 20mph limits encourage more people to walk and cycle, result in fewer greenhouse gases and reduced noise pollution.

Introducing them on our residential roads would be a good way to help mitigate the environmental impact the Airport has and make our city cleaner and greener.”

South Manchester MP John Leech , who won BRAKE's Parliamentarian of the Year for Road Safety, said: "The Council has received a one off windfall from the Airport group. Manchester Liberal Democrats are rightly calling for this money to be invested in our future. Introducing 20mph limits will prevent countless road casualties and injuries but it will also make our residential roads nicer places to be and more environmentally friendly."

Chorlton Landmark to under go £750k refurbishment

Horse and Jockey undergoes a three quarter-of-a-million pound refurbishment

Chorlton based pub, The Horse and Jockey, is excited to announce that they will be re-launching in late March after a £750,000 refurbishment.

Following the overhaul the Jockey will re-open with a completely new concept, menu, and interior design. The refurbishment will see the current interior reconditioned and rejuvenated in to a contemporary and classic style.  The revamp will also see the kitchen extended to accommodate a more detailed menu.

Management believe the refurbishment will not change the essence of the pub but instead enhance it. General Manager Claire Lockhart explains, ‘We don’t really want to loose what the pub is, we’re still are a family friendly place but we don’t want to be outdated either. So we’re really welcoming the change but don’t intend to loose the charm.”

The launch party will take place on the weekend on Saturday 29th March with live bands and entertainment from 6pm onwards all for free. Join the Horse and Jockey mailing list for more information on how to get you free tickets and up-dates on the line-up. www.horseandjockeychorlton.com

Jacksons Boat Footbridge

Manchester City Council will be constructing a new disabled access ramp and steps on the Manchester side of Jacksons Boat Footbridge.

The current arrangement makes access difficult for cyclists and near impossible for wheel chair users and prams to use without assistance.

The works will start on the 17th of February and be completed by April.

The Council will keep the bridge open for the majority of the project but it will be necessary to close the bridge for a few days to enable certain works to be undertaken safely.

The closure dates will be:
19/2/2014 to 21/2/2014 and 17/3/2014 to 20/3/2014

If you have any questions please let me know.

Lib Dems select local Councillor Mary Di Mauro to stand in Wythenshawe and Sale East by-election.

Promoting Small Business Saturday with Mary
Local Liberal Democrats have tonight (Sunday January 26th) selected Northenden Councillor Mary Di Mauro to be the Liberal Democrat Candidate in the by-election following the death of Labour MP Paul Goggins.

Mary was a secondary school teacher for ten years. She lives in Northenden village with her husband and two children. Mary has represented Northenden ward on Manchester City Council since 2010.

Mary Di Mauro said: "I am very proud to have been selected to fight Wythenshawe and Sale East for the Liberal Democrats in the by-election. I have lived locally for 20 years and have always stood up for this area on Manchester City Council. I am standing in this by election because I want to be a strong voice for local people in Parliament."

"I'm not backed by big business or trade unions. I am a local person who wants to help the area in which I live. Families around here need someone who understands their concerns and their problems."

Local Manchester MP John Leech said: "I'm delighted that Mary has been selected to be the Lib Dem candidate in this by election. I know what difference a hardworking, local MP can make. I have known Mary for years and she will be a fantastic representative for local people and their families. Wythenshawe and Sale East needs an MP who knows the issues and understands our area."

"People in Wythenshawe need a positive alternative to Labour. Gordon Brown crashed the economy and Ed Miliband has no ideas for sorting it out. In Government the Lib Dems have cut taxes for working families – people in our area have £700 a year off their tax bill thanks to the Lib Dems."

"Locally, Labour are getting their priorities all wrong – cutting vital services in Manchester whilst spending millions on refurbishing council buildings and wasting hundreds of thousands on public art in East Manchester.

"Despite their hype, UKIP aren’t a safe alternative. All the experts agree that their policies would hit British jobs hard – putting up to 3million British jobs at risk. Even they admit their policies are “nonsense”. Now, just as the economy is starting to recover, is not the time to put this many jobs at risk."

Chorlton supporters hit back at 'high burglary' tag

Yesterday I put up a post refuting claims that Chorlton is the UK's Burglary capital. This article appeared in today's Manchester Evening News in response to yesterday's media reports:

Chorlton NOT Burglary Capital

A number of residents have contacted me about alarming media reports suggesting Chorlton is the burglary hotspot of the UK. Residents often tell me that burglary is a major concern to them. This is a crime that always comes up in meetings with the local Police and I know it has been one of their local priority for a number of years. However crime statistics show overall crime is down in Chorlton including burglary.

The figures that have been reported are a massive distortion of the truth because they only reflect the number of insurance claims for burglary. Chorlton is an area where most people have household insurance and consequently they use it if they are unfortunate enough to experience a burglary. Many parts of Manchester are blighted by more burglaries but fewer residents have (or claim) on their household insurance so they are not represented so highly in the figures that have been reported.

Chorlton's Police Inspector, Paul Kinrade, sent me the following message today following the reports:

Burglary is undoubtedly a major challenge for my team, however there are far worse areas, within Greater Manchester, with significantly  higher burglary rates.

The reality is, that overall crime, including burglary,  within your ward, has reduced, over the last 12 months, compared to the same period in 2012. Burglary is an onerous crime, which leaves an indelible impact on the victims, this is why it has and with always be one of my top priorities.
We have made some significant arrests over the last few weeks, of individuals who have been preying on Chorlton residents. On a daily basis, I have staff out on the ground in both an overt and covert capacity, policing the area.
Please ensure that you disseminate the reassurance message to the Chorlton community, it's a great place to live and my neighbourhood team are doing everything possible to ensure that it continues to be.

These statistics give the wrong impression of our area. Chorlton is one of the most vibrant parts of Manchester and I know so many residents care about and get involved in the community. However I will make sure I continue to raise resident's concerns about burglary when I meet Police officers so that tackling burglary remains a top priority and we don't reappear in these statistics! If there's anything I can do to help or if you would be interested in setting up or getting involved in a Home Watch scheme please get in touch with me.

Manchester council spends £70m on agency staff in six years

This article appeared in today's Manchester Evening News about information I've obtained showing the Council has spent £70,000,000 on Agency staff over the last six years (click picture to make it larger):

At a time when the Council is laying thousands of workers off and imposing harmful cuts on Manchester communities; it is hugely wasteful for them to be spending millions on agency staff. This is just the latest example of Manchester Labour making the wrong choices with our money.

Chorlton MP John Leech said: "If there is a full time job to be done a worker should get a full time job with proper workers rights, using agency staff doesn't save money and doesn't give the workers the rights they deserve."

The figures for each year are:

01.04.2007 - 31.03.2008 - £14,408,317
01.04.2008 - 31.03.2009 - £17,014,007
01.04.2009 - 31.03.2010 - £16,455,400
01.04.2010 - 31.03.2011 - £11,577,246
01.04.2011 - 31.03.2012 - £10,960,207
01.04.2012 - 31.03.2013 - £2,798,038 in addition to the £9,813,022 spent on Temporary staff
